The insurance industry has been hit hard of late due to pandemics, supply chain disruptions, inflation and more frequent natural disaster claims. Insurance premium rates, in turn, have risen sharply, prompting many consumers to seek new policies.

Based in San Antonio, USAA was founded in 1922 by a group of Army officers who wanted to self-insure their cars. Today, USAA caters exclusively to military, veterans, and their families, offering a variety of insurance and financial products.
Is USAA good insurance?
Our top auto insurance company for 2023, USAA, outperformed its competitors in a variety of categories. Fares with USAA were the cheapest on average across all companies in our analysis and across multiple categories related to age, gender and other demographics. USAA also received high marks for customer service from our survey respondents, and its customers are more likely to renew or recommend USAA to others than any other insurer in our rankings. The only subcategory in which USAA ranked second was in claims handling, where American Family was No. 1.
USAA Customer Service
With a score of 4.4 out of 5, USAA easily beat out competitors to take the No. 1 spot for customer service. American Family and State Farm, tied for No. 2, weren’t far behind with scores of 4.3. Some 90% of survey respondents said they were either satisfied or very satisfied with USAA customer service.

USAA, with a score of 4.2, is No. 2 in our claims handling subcategory, second only to No. 1 American Family with a score of 4.3. USAA scored high overall, but trailed American Family for satisfaction in all of our related survey questions, including ease of filing a claim, status updates during the claim process, and how to resolve a claim. Satisfied. About 84% of USAA customers said they were either satisfied or completely satisfied with how their claim was resolved.
USAA Customer Loyalty.
USAA is No. 1 in our customer loyalty subcategory, and 96% of survey respondents say they are likely or very likely to renew their policy. Among other insurers, only American Family received a comparable number of positive survey responses, with 91% of their customers also saying they plan to renew. At the other end of the scale, according to our subcategory rankings, farmer consumers were the least likely to renew.
USAA rates for teenage drivers.
USAA proved to be the cheapest average rates for teen drivers in our study, saving about $2,000 a year compared to the national average for a 17-year-old female, and about $2,400 for a male. Drivers in this age group pay more for car insurance on average than any other age group, so shopping around can lead to big savings. Farmers proved to be the most expensive insurer for this group, with an average annual rate of $8,178 for a woman, and $8,911 for a man.
USAA sells car insurance exclusively to members of the military community, but drivers who don’t qualify for USAA can try Geico or State Farm. Geico is No. 2 for male teenagers with a rate nearly 35% lower than average. The state ranks No. 2 for female adolescents with a rate nearly 35% below the national average.
